Hotazel Management Mine Education Trust (HMMET)
HMMET was established to undertake and to complete projects for the educational upliftment of the Northern Cape, primarily for the benefit of residents in Joe Morolong local municipality, and also for the residents of John Taolo district municipality.
In accordance with the realities facing every stage of the educational continuum, a four-phase intervention has been recommended to have an impact at each educational level with immediate effect, and a cumulative impact on the younger children starting out, as they would have the benefit at each stage as they progress along their educational path. The four areas are early childhood development (ECD), primary education, secondary education, and tertiary education.
HMMET’s major area of interest is in education.
Early childhood development (ECD)
Early childhood is the most rapid period of development in a human life. The positive effects of ECD programmes can change the development trajectory of children by the time they enter school – and a school-ready child has less chance of repeating a grade, being placed in special education, or being a school drop-out.
HMMET will undertake the following activities in achieving its objectives in ECD:
- Capacity building and mentorship of ECD practitioners
- Creating links between the ECD centres, government, and academic institutions
HMMET’s interventions will assist the educators to carry out the mandate of the Department of Education in literacy teaching in foundation and intermediate phase, and will introduce problem-solving workshops for foundation and intermediate phase in mathematics for grades 5, 6 and 7.
HMMET will undertake the following activities in achieving its objectives in primary education:
- Capacity building for grade 5, 6 and 7 educators to improve literacy outcomes for learners in those grades
The most urgent areas of need at secondary-school level are usually the supplementation of mathematics, physical science, and English skills.
HMMET will undertake the following activities in achieving its objectives in secondary education:
- Capacity building for grade 9, 10 and 11 educators on mathematics and physical science
- Extra programmes for grade 9, 10 and 11 learners on mathematics and physical science
